Commercial software
The Physics department has Mathematica and Matlab available, and we can make use of these programs for the occasional user.

Note: the campus license for Maple was terminated a couple of years ago.
 
Free / Open Source mathematical software
Most of our Linux desktops have the following software installed:
 Maxima (and the 
wxMaxima graphical interface) for symbolic computation
 
 
 Octave - numerical computations, mostly matlab compatible in syntax
